Representing TEA at the Annual Tahoe Economic Summit

This past fall, Interim Head of School Ken Martin represented Tahoe Expedition Academy at the 2018 Tahoe Economic Summit presented by the Tahoe Prosperity Center.

The theme was “Transforming Tahoe” and the Tahoe Prosperity Center brought together community leaders to share ideas about how to Transform Tahoe positively. The Summit encouraged discussion and learning in the areas of Innovative Economic Development, Housing, Education, and Workforce.

Ken attended the keynote featuring Christopher Thornberg from Beacon Economics with an incredibly engaging presentation on national, regional & local economic data and trends. Christopher highlighted that the I-80 corridor from Sacramento to Reno is enjoying tremendous growth and underscored that housing is and will be the biggest limiting factor in sustained economic growth. Ken participated in an Education and Workforce breakout session with presentations by Manny Lamarre, Executive Director At Governor’s Office Of Workforce Innovation who discussed strengthening Nevada’s workforce with industry support in developing internships, etc. and Hayley Mears, Program Manager at Monterey Bay Economic Partnership, who shared their innovative app that connects young people with local colleges and job opportunities based on their interests. Ken has had initial conversations with the Tahoe Prosperity Center about the possibility of hosting a future Tahoe Economic Summit at the Martis Valley Campus.

TEA students, along with other students from South Tahoe High School, have participated in the Summit’s workshops as the “youth voice” alongside over 150 professionals from around the Lake Tahoe area. Check out this post for more on our student involvement.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center recently released this video from the event. Ken is one of the featured speakers in the video, please take a few moments to watch. And thank you, Ken, for representing our CommuniTEA!
