A Letter About #GivingTuesday at TEA from Taylor Simmers

I hope you will consider giving to an organization that has meant a lot to you or means a lot to the world; it does good and feels good.

Dear CommuniTEA,

We know you love supporting causes you believe in. Today, I am supporting my Princeton University Lacrosse Team because it was such an awesome time of my life, and I love our coaches and the athletic program they offer.

I hope you will consider giving to an organization that has meant a lot to you or means a lot to the world; it does good and feels good.

For TEA students (and we hope all of you), making a difference for important causes happens throughout the entire year, not just once a year on #GivingTuesday. And the concepts of service, advocacy, and stewardship are things our students engage with daily. We can only hope they continue to support organizations and people they believe in long into their adult lives. If so, we believe we can all make a difference in the world, one small (or large) act at a time.

All the best,

Taylor Simmers. Co-Founder

TEA students have given countless hours to dozens of organizations around the world. Here are a few examples:

Praxis Community Projects

Our HS students worked with this organization where they served refugees from Middle Eastern and African countries. The students volunteered in a day center supporting the Greek homeless population which included an abundance of struggling refugees. There the students took care of children so that their parents could use the centers’ other resources including job, legal, and medical services. They also managed the clothing distribution room where they sorted and supplied families with clothing to prepare for the winter. Read more here…

Hurricane Irma Disaster Relief

A group of 9th and 10th grade TEA students traveled to South Florida to help people affected by Irma. Their goal on the trip – to help restore and regenerate some of the negative effects of Irma. Throughout their experiences, students learned a lot about how natural disasters impact people and how they can help. Read more…

Veteran’s Guest House and Veteran Affairs Hospital

As part of their service learning project, our 5th-grade Blackwood Crew developed a relationship with the Veterans Guest House, a local non-profit in Reno. The Blackwood Crew visited the Veterans Guest House with arms full of food that they had prepared, as well as the Veteran Affairs hospital where they gifted the Veterans hand crafted cards that they had made. Read more here…

Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences (TINS), the Sugar Pine Foundation, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Truckee Trails, and the USFS

We wanted to do environmental stewardship projects across the community, with children from all of the Tahoe/Truckee area schools and service groups participating. We were fortunate to have several non-profit organizations join us for the day including the Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences (TINS), the Sugar Pine Foundation, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Truckee Trails, and the USFS. With all of this support, we were able to put over 350 students into the field around Truckee to make a significant impact. Thank you for giving to your causes, whatever they may be. More giving. More doing.
