2nd Graders Study Social and Environmental Science by Examining the Washoe Culture
On our recent field study to Steward Head Start, our students began to learn how the Washoe culture is still prevalent in our area and what cultural practices are still practiced today.
Our Seasons of the Washoe learning expedition focuses on the local Native people, in particular the Washoe. Students will explore the full circle between the Washoe way of life and the demands and resources of the environment. Tracing the seasonal migration on a map, students will be able to explain the reasons and resources that necessitated that lifestyle. To build background knowledge for this expedition, students will interact with Washoe children and adults.
On our recent field study to Steward Head Start, our students began to learn how the Washoe culture is still prevalent in our area and what cultural practices are still practiced today. Buddying with children at Stewart Head Start, students read to and played games to notice things they have in common. Learning Wasiw songs from our buddies, students will gain an understanding of the Wasiw language and the why it is important to the Washoe to preserve it.
